Airports and Airstrips With Difficult Runways

Airstrip In the Jungle – PowerPoint Slide

Difficult Runways

Alan Thomas, my father, tells me that every runway has a number which indicates its bearing. Silly me, I thought it was the runway number – then 22 runways in a jungle clearing did seem to be odd!

Airport (landing strip) dominates island

The Island is part of an Atoll in Micronesia, called Ulithi Atoll. The Atoll belongs to Yap State which is part of the Federated States of Micronesia, just south of Guam. I am based on the Island of Yap, and I fly for an organization called Pacific Missionary Aviation. We fly to that island twice a week, with Beechcraft Queen Airs. Yeah you’ve definitely got to be on the ball landing there, but its runway is only 3,000 feet long, so there is a little margin for error, if you land a little long. By the way, did you see the bearing number (10) on the runway?

Runway Madeira Underground

In 2000 the island of Madeira built a new runway. The pillars that you see in the photos above stand 60m tall. What you don’t see is that each of the 180 pillars also extends downwards 60m below sea level.

Difficult Plane Landing

Finally, everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane. She said, ‘Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?’ Why no Ma’am’, said the pilot, ‘What is it’, the little old lady said, ‘Did we land or were we shot down?’
